One Gesture is a show about sign languages.

It is a show about communicating with the world - with the world of the hearing and with the world of the other Deaf. How does communication work? What can we learn about the world from the languages of the Deaf? What is universal about their experience of communicating, and what is unique?

“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.“ With this sentence in the back of his head director and artist Wojtek Ziemilski started working on a piece for four performers with hearing impairments. And he realised how true this sentence actually is. His own language appeared to him increasingly inadequate. When people talk to each other in sign language, they look into the other’s eyes and not at their hands. Their language is more than a sequence of mechanical hand signs – they speak with their entire body. Consequently sign language became the perfect dramatic medium for Ziemilski, as a sort of performance quite similar to dance.

In “Jeden gest“ four women and men tell their personal stories. They convey how their hearing impairment affects their lives and how they deal with their situation. All of them found it difficult in their childhood to adapt to the world of those who could hear and who perceived not hearing only as a deficit. But “Jeden gest“ is more than just an interesting lesson about the reality of a minority. This performance takes the audience on a journey of a fascinating, unknown world of language. A world in which communication is an event of gesture, facial expressions, rhythm and movement – something that has to be seen to be understood.

...Words are definitely not enough to describe what makes One Gesture an amazing experience. ...Ziemilski leaves his audience with tears in their eyes resulting not from a cheap melodramatic thrill but from the pure experience of learning more about another human being. ...The performance crushes conventional boundaries and grips its audience by the guts without the use of elaborate gimmicks. Without following prescribed patterns, and relying on simple communication, it shows that sometimes words are hardly needed–a gesture is enough to create a bridge of understanding.-Agata Tumiłowicz-Mazur, The Theatre Times. We can learn a lot from Wojtek Ziemilski’s Jeden gest. ... A theatre that wants to be close to life.
Piotr Morawski, dwutygodnik.com

An aesthetically refined and dramatically coherent form... What emerges as a result is a rather fascinating set of gestures which become not only a means of communication but also a fascinating choreography.

Wojtek Ziemilski invited renowned Swiss perfumer Andreas Wilhelm to create a unique scent - the scent of Poland.
The project is a perfume accompanied by a lecture performance.
A sensual treatise about "the essence" of things, about the contemporary return of the great narratives, paradoxical in a world of such variety and change. The volatile, yet concretely present, work is something difficult to escape, it imposes its apparent essence.

Sharing national identity is tricky. How to share something which is intuitive and personal, yet objective, or at least, collective? In a time when politics is mainly about dividing and antagonism, how to find a sense of cohesion and commonness?

One possible solution is to think of politics as concretely as possible. Jacques Rancière famously asserted that politics are the division of the sensible. The smell can be a powerful weapon, building an unavoidable politics. We become the other - we dive in it, nose first. We discover a new, foreign feeling in the perfume that became us.
The perfume is available in a signed limited edition of 101 bottles. For details contact Culturescapes - jcooiman@culturescapes.ch
“Essence of Poland” opened the Culturscapes 2019 Festival in Basel, Switzerland.

Once upon a time of zoom meetings, selfie broadcasting and snap-chat masks there was a country that had LGBTQ+ free zones: ‘zones free of queer ideology’ they called them in the country, but meant: zones free of queer people. The country was part of the EU. The zones were completely mundane and full of strange creatures. We went there. The rest is history.

Zoom seems like a bad thing. (Close but far, human but square, normal but exhausting....)

So we start from Zoom. And we feel awkward. Like it’s a substitute that we’re trying to make ours, to believe this is not just a sex doll. (Because it’s not)

We want to make it bearable. Not just bearable. Cozy. And nice.

Now, stay with us: maybe it’s a metaphor of Europe. Or the EU. The universal language of Europe has this awkward quality, like it’s a substitute. Focus on it not being virtual. The opposite of Matrix - there is a spoon. There is a spoon.

A crazy combination of a DJ set, an inquiry into the future, and above all, an intimate story of trying to deal with Mother.

“In 100 years there will be no trains, no body hair, no protruding veins, no eggs, no baseball caps, unfortunately no socks, no fireworks, no theatre, no. There will be no theatre. Theatre will turn out to be completely ununiversal. And will end. Contrary to what had been predicted. But if anything will still be there, it is the Mothers. Also the worrying ones.”

The Polaks are no better explaining the future than the rest of the world. And still, they enthusiastically jump into the amateurish futurology. Through sampling remixing the heritage of whining, the siblings Jasmina and Piotr Polak build a subversive force. The Polaks’ DJ set is a witty fight against a pessimistic version of the future. Can they save themselves from the negativity of their own mother?Written and directed by Wojtek Ziemilski

Based on an original choreography by Maria Stokłosa, made anew every time, this show tries the impossible - to guide the audience through everything that the movements of the body consist of - the person, the biography, the philosophy, the history. The unknown will become familiar, dance will be spoken, traditions unbroken.

A dance and theatre project based on a personal story in the context of great political and systemic changes.

In the autumn of 2006 it was found out that Wojtek
Ziemilski's grandfather, Wojciech Dzieduszycki, a notable citizen of the city
of Wroclaw, was for many years a collaborator of the communist secret police.
The family has not recovered from the shock, and tries to arrive at the true
story. Wojtek's answer to this situation was a performance in the form of a
lecture, combining personal narration, historical facts, contemporary
choreography, and small and great narratives. It is an attempt to confront his
artistic choices with the history on which he had no influence. This lecture-performance
is a combination of various forms of public address and artistic expression.
One can find in it elements of personal confession, academic lecture, video
art, and contemporary choreography. Theater intermingles with reality, private
narration with historical commentary - all this in order to cope with the
painful problem of memory and the manipulations it undergoes.

"When I decided to write Small
Narration I asked myself
"What have I got that's powerful for me?" And I felt I had two
things, one - that I'm a grandson, and the other - the universe of contemporary
performing and visual art I identify with. After all, what is special about
this sort of approach is a direct link with reality - with document,
autobiography, with what surrounds us.

Small
Narration is for me, among other things, a piece about memory. Memory is a
space where the pain of absence is felt most acutely. Especially when we think
about people, we remember a body, contact, its physicality, and at the same
time our whole memory is connected to their absence. It's based on the body not
being here anymore".

A 16-minute performance for four performers: 1 human and 3 balloons.

A strange form is floating in the air. It’s a large balloon partially filled with helium. It seems to be manipulated by an invisible force. The human performer keeps negotiating his position with this unusual being. Who is leading who? How does one empathize with such a radical other? How does this even work? Is it directed? This is a transhumanist story, or a fairy-tale, or a symbol of alter ego. A formal choreography, an abstract performance, a human negotiation, a floating question.

Idea/directed by: Wojtek Ziemilski
Devised by: Wojtek Ziemilski and Wojciech Pustoła

Cast: Wojciech Pustoła/ Magda Ptasznik
A production of Komuna // Warszawa

Duration: 16 minutes
Part of the “Mikroteatr” series curated by Tomasz Plata
Shown at:

A witty and playful test of the limits of participatory theatre.Theatre is a symbol, or an excuse - for the nightmare of participation we experience everywhere. “Come Together” plays that game well, asking us constantly to join, while simultaneously showing how participation is impossible.

Five performers create a perfect illusion of communication. They are with us, they talk to us, they see us and acknowledge us. Nothing seems to stop us from joining them and getting even more out of theatre. So what’s stopping us? Can this be real? Can we really come together?Text/Directed by Wojtek Ziemilski
Performed and co-devised by Lena Frankiewicz, Maria Stokłosa, Sean Palmer, Wojciech Pustoła, Krzysztof Strużycki
Scenography and costumes by Wojciech Pustoła

Supposedly every spectator dreams of entering the stage, while every actor is affraid of the audience invading his space. But is it really true? The extraordinary (anti)participatory project of Wojtek Ziemilski questions such concepts as: actors, audience, interaction, participation, involvement, fiction, reality, freedom of choice, theatrical convention - and it does all this with an anarchic sense of humor and the disarming insolence of a child who still doesn’t know what is allowed in theatre and what isn’t. - Anna Róża Burzyńska, Didaskalia
